Visit of Canadian Parliamentary Delegation in INER

The Canadian Parliamentary Delegation visited the Nuclear Energy Research Institute (INER) on Aril 13 to learn about the development of nuclear related technologies in Taiwan and their applications. Through the request from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, INER managed a video brief followed by a technical tour to two facilities. The delegation members showed their interest in the laboratory for spent fuel examination and the technology in plasma coating. The activity was successful with compliments from the delegation.

The Canadian Parliamentary Delegation led by Honorable John McKay, Chair of the Defense Committee consisting of 12 Members of Parliament visited Taiwan from April 10th to 15th, including Honorable Michael Chong, Vice-Chair of the Canada-China Relations Special Committee, Mr. James Bezan, Vice-Chair of the Defense Committee, Mr. Ken Hardie, Chair of the Canada-China Relations Special Committee, Ms. Heather McPherson, Vice-Chair of the Foreign Affairs Committee, and Mr. Stéphane Bergeron, Vice-Chair of the Foreign Affairs Committee. They were invited to visit INER as one of the activities to understand the development in interested technologies in Taiwan

During the welcome remarks, INER’s Director-General Dr. Chen pointed out that a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) between INER and the Canadian Nuclear Waste Management Organization (NWMO) was signed in September 2018. After that, INER sent some experts visiting NWMO's laboratory to exchange views on issues of safe disposal strategies and proposals. He expressed appreciation to the delegation for the help from INER’s counterpart in Canada and their experience in High Level Waste (HLW) management. In addition, Dr. Chen reminded that INER had signed an agreement recently with a Canadian company to install a 70-Mev Proton Cyclotron in one of its laboratories to reinforce the capacity building in the research of nuclear medication, radiation therapy, and other advanced applications. He highlighted the expectation for more enhanced bilateral communication and interactions. The delegation leader Mr. McKay replied with the gratitude for the management of the visit and their wishes for close cooperation.
